Michael Christian Martinez, the lone representative of the Philippines to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics carried the country’s flag during the opening ceremony of the Sochi Games on February 8, 2014.
The 17-year-old figure skater from Muntinlupa City is the first Pinoy to represent the Philippines in the Winter Games.
During the opening rites, Martinez marched carrying the Philippine flag. He was called the “highly talented figure skater” by the commentator at the lavish ceremony.
Martinez was so proud to represent the country despite the fact that Philippines is a tropical country and there is only two seasons, the rainy and dry.
“I feel proud because there are a lot of people that say that because we’re a tropical country, we can’t do this or we can’t do that,” Martinez said.
“But what I say to them is them is that I’ll be the first one to skate in the Olympics. I’m proud of that,” he added.
